Over the past semester, I had the opportunity to complete a research project under the supervision of Mareike Moeller in Benjamin Schwessinger’s lab at the Australian National University’s Research School of Biology.
This project was a pilot study focused on validating a molecular diagnostic workflow for Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, a fungal pathogen that poses a major threat to Australian wheat production. The aim was to test whether phenotypic screening and haplotype-aware sequencing could be combined to better understand pathogen diversity and infection dynamics. I’m extremely grateful to my supervisors and the incredible researchers in the lab for their mentorship and support throughout the semester. This experience has reinforced my motivation to continue building my skills in bioscience. I’m excited to keep learning, exploring new research areas, and sharing my journey on my blog.
